Misunderstanding Christian Suffering

Misunderstanding Christian Suffering

Many people misunderstand suffering in the Christian life.

The Bible does teach that believers may suffer, but not in the way many people assume.

God has not promised His children sickness, poverty, or destruction. Jesus made it clear that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but He came so that we might have life abundantly.

The suffering believers experience is different.

God Did Not Promise Sickness or Poverty

If you want to understand God’s will, look at Jesus. During His earthly ministry, Jesus healed the sick, delivered the oppressed, and restored broken lives.

Sickness, poverty, and destruction do not come from God. Instead, Jesus demonstrated God’s goodness and His desire to bring life and restoration.

The Suffering of the Flesh

One type of suffering comes from learning to discipline the flesh. When a person becomes a believer, their spirit is renewed, but their body still has habits and desires that must be brought under control.

This means learning to say no to sinful appetites.

When believers resist temptation and choose righteousness, there can be discomfort. This is the suffering of discipline.

Joseph demonstrated this when he refused the temptation of Potiphar’s wife. His obedience cost him temporary comfort, but it preserved his destiny.

The Suffering of Persecution

Another kind of suffering occurs when believers stand for righteousness. Jesus warned that those who live godly lives will face opposition.

People may misunderstand you, criticize you, or even reject you because of your faith. This can be painful, but it is not a sign of failure. Often, it is evidence that you are walking faithfully with Christ.

Jesus Himself was rejected and falsely accused. If people spoke against Him, we should not be surprised when they speak against His followers.
