When God Risks Everything: The Hidden Heroes Behind the Resurrection
Bible Reading: John 19:33–42
One of the greatest demonstrations of God's love was not merely that He sent Jesus Christ to die for the sins of the world—it was that He entrusted His entire plan of redemption to people who possessed the freedom to choose. Love always involves risk. God created humanity with free will, fully aware that people could reject Him, fail Him, or abandon Him. Yet He chose to love anyway.
The cross is the ultimate picture of faith working through love. God's decision to send His Son into the world was not a gamble born of uncertainty but an act of unwavering confidence in His own sovereign plan. Throughout history, mankind repeatedly failed God. From Adam's disobedience in the Garden of Eden to Israel's repeated rebellion, humanity proved incapable of perfect obedience. Still, God refused to give up on His creation.
Instead, He continued raising up men and women who would respond in faith.
Long before Jesus began His public ministry, God had already prepared Joseph and Mary to protect and nurture the Messiah. Their obedience preserved Jesus during His childhood when King Herod sought His life. Every step of Christ's earthly journey reveals that God was orchestrating His redemptive plan through willing hearts.
Yet perhaps the greatest risk came after Jesus breathed His last on the cross.
The disciples who had boldly declared their loyalty had scattered in fear. Humanly speaking, everything appeared to have fallen apart. Under normal Roman practice, the bodies of crucified criminals were often left exposed as a public warning or disposed of in mass graves if left unclaimed. Had Jesus' body been treated in this manner, His burial would not have fulfilled the prophetic picture revealed throughout Scripture.
But God had already prepared two unexpected men.
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus—men who had previously followed Jesus quietly—stepped forward with remarkable courage. They publicly identified themselves with Christ at the very moment when nearly everyone else had abandoned Him. Joseph boldly requested Jesus' body from Pilate, while Nicodemus brought costly burial spices. Together they ensured that Jesus received an honorable burial in a new tomb, exactly as God's Word had foretold.
What appeared to be an impossible situation was actually another demonstration of God's perfect providence.
Psalm 16:10 declares:
"For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption."
Jesus Himself repeatedly declared that He would rise again on the third day. Even in death, God's promises remained certain. His resurrection was never in doubt because God's Word cannot fail. This account teaches an important lesson for every believer.
There will be moments when God asks us to obey Him before we understand how everything will work out. He may lead us to give generously, forgive someone who hurt us deeply, start a ministry, leave a secure job, or step into unfamiliar territory. Often the outcome will seem completely beyond our control. At those moments, we must remember the cross.
If God could orchestrate every detail of humanity's greatest act of evil into history's greatest victory, He can certainly be trusted with every area of our lives. Radical obedience requires radical confidence in God's faithfulness.
The story of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus also reminds us that God often uses unexpected people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. While the twelve disciples hid in fear, two men who had quietly believed stepped forward in courage. God is never limited by the people we expect Him to use.
Finally, Jesus teaches us the power of agreeing with God's Word. Throughout His ministry, He consistently declared what the Father had spoken concerning Him. His confidence rested not in circumstances but in God's promises. Believers are called to do the same. When we continually speak and stand upon God's Word, we align ourselves with His purposes and strengthen our faith, regardless of what we see around us.
No circumstance is too difficult for God. No setback can overturn His plan. No obstacle can cancel His promises.
The cross proves that what looks like defeat can become the doorway to victory when God is in control.
When your future seems uncertain, trust the God who planned the resurrection before the foundation of the world. The same God who prepared Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus at exactly the right moment is already preparing people, opportunities, and divine appointments for your life.
His faithfulness has never failed—and it never will.
