"For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost."
As Jesus passed through Jericho, He encountered a man named Zacchaeus. To most people, Zacchaeus was known as a dishonest tax collector—a sinner who had become wealthy through corruption. Many considered him unworthy of God's attention. But Jesus saw beyond his reputation. He saw a heart that was ready to be transformed.
Luke's Gospel presents two wealthy men who responded to Jesus in very different ways.
In Luke 18, the rich young ruler came to Jesus asking what he needed to do to inherit eternal life. Although he appeared morally upright, he walked away sorrowful when Jesus challenged him to let go of his possessions. His wealth had become the master of his heart, and he was unwilling to surrender it.
Zacchaeus, however, responded differently. He joyfully welcomed Jesus into his home, and that encounter changed him from the inside out. Without being forced or manipulated, he willingly offered to give half of his possessions to the poor and restore fourfold anything he had gained dishonestly.
Notice that Jesus did not demand Zacchaeus give away his wealth before salvation came to his house. Instead, a transformed heart produced transformed actions. Genuine repentance is more than feeling sorry for sin—it is allowing God to change our values, priorities, and way of living.
This raises an important question for each of us: What occupies the throne of our hearts?
Many people spend their lives pursuing money, success, possessions, recognition, or status, believing these things will bring lasting fulfillment. Yet no amount of wealth or achievement can satisfy the deepest longing of the human soul. We were created to know God, and only He can fill that place.
When Jesus entered Zacchaeus' home, He also entered his heart. His priorities changed because his relationship with Christ became his greatest treasure.
Jesus is not after your money—He is after your heart. When your heart belongs to Him, everything else finds its proper place. Your finances become a tool rather than a master, your success becomes an opportunity to glorify God, and your possessions become resources for advancing His Kingdom.
Today, invite Jesus to search your heart. Whatever competes with Him for first place is worth surrendering, because nothing compares to the joy of knowing Him.
Prayer
Father, thank You for sending Jesus to seek and save those who are lost. Guard my heart from placing money, possessions, success, or anything else above You. Transform my values, priorities, and desires so that my life reflects Your heart. May You always have first place in my life, and may everything You have entrusted to me be used for Your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
