“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” — 1 Peter 2:9 (KJV)
The glorious consequence of believing the Gospel is something that will take all eternity for us to fully comprehend. In 1 Peter 2, we see that believing the Gospel is a choice. Once the Gospel has been clearly presented to an individual, regardless of their background, the Holy Spirit convicts them of sin, and they must choose whether to believe and accept it or refuse it.
Once someone accepts the Gospel, it is no longer offensive to them. Instead, it becomes a rock on which their life can be built. At salvation, we are immediately translated from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of God’s dear Son—the Kingdom of light.
Before Christ, we lived under the power of darkness, subject to sin, oppression, and death. We stumbled around in darkness, not knowing where we were going and dealing with all the evil that functions there. But now that we are in the Kingdom of light, we can rest assured that our lives are not directionless. We have been delivered from the power of darkness. This is what it means to be a new man in Christ. We have been given a completely new identity. We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a peculiar people. We have been called to be different.
God did not bring us out of darkness so that we could continue living like those who are still in darkness. As His people, we now have the hosts of heaven at our disposal and the power of God working in us. Our lives should demonstrate the difference between the kingdom of darkness and the Kingdom of God.
We are free from the powers of darkness, oppression, sin, and death. Now it is our responsibility to show the world around us the goodness of the God who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.
