Bible Reading: Matthew 13:47-58
Special Verse: Matthew 13:58 –
“And he did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.”
Familiarity can become a barrier that prevents us from receiving what God has for us through the people around us. Even though Jesus was the Messiah, performing undeniable miracles, many still failed to receive from Him.
Two groups, in particular, struggled with this:
-
The Religious Leaders (Pharisees & Sadducees) – As the recognized custodians of Jewish faith, they couldn't fathom that God would bypass their authority and work through a carpenter’s son.
-
His Own Family & Hometown – Those who grew up with Jesus, played with Him as children, or watched Him mature as adults couldn’t accept that He was God in human flesh. Their familiarity with His ordinary life became a stumbling block to recognizing His divine calling.
The same principle applies today. When we become overly familiar with people in our lives—friends, family, pastors, or mentors—we may begin to disregard the anointing of God upon them. This attitude can hinder us from receiving the answers to our prayers, as God often uses those closest to us to bring His blessings.
Take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal if familiarity has caused you to overlook someone God is using to speak into your life. If so, repent and open your heart to receive, so you don’t miss out on what God has prepared for you.
