Identity Crises

Identity Crises

Bible Reading: John 1:19-23; Matthew 5:14

Memory verse: Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.’”

John the Baptist knew who he was and as a result, people’s opinion didn’t affect him. When he started his ministry, people couldn’t place him. They thought he could fit into the mold of the Messiah, yet he spoke like a prophet. When they asked him who he was, he clearly told them, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness” “He clearly knew who he was and what God called him to do. This all started before he was born, he was filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb. He must have built a strong fellowship with the Spirit. He fulfilled his ministry because he was not afraid to decrease while Jesus increased.

Today, we have people who claim to have a gender identity crisis. For God’s sake, do you need to pay a psychologist to tell you if you are male or female? Pastor Joseph Prince always  says, “Right believing produces right living”. Think about it, if you believe you are a dog, you will act like one. If you believe you are a pig, you will eat pig food and wallow in dirt. Remember that the prodigal son did not seek change until he came to himself and remembered whose he was. When you know and believe who you are in God, your life and behavior will change.

John the Baptist did not allow people to shape his dress code or food, he was not afraid to be different because he knew his purpose. Our identity is clearly spelt out in the Bible. When we let the Spirit reveal the word to us, we will discover ourselves. I want to challenge you to direct all your time and energy in discovering who you are in Christ. When you do, life takes a new meaning, and most of the things that bother you will become unimportant.
