One Thing Is Needful
Scripture: Luke 10:38–42;
Special Verse: Mark 3:14
And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
Jesus entered Martha’s home, and while Martha rushed around trying to serve well, Mary sat at His feet—listening. Martha wasn’t doing something “bad.” She was doing what many people call “ministry.” But Jesus corrected her focus: “Only one thing is needed.” Jesus wasn’t against Martha serving him but was concerned about her priority. Furthermore, we need to understand that we can’t effectively serve someone if we don’t know them and their preferences.
That phrase is a reset for every believer—especially those who love God and love serving. It’s easy to become busy for Jesus and slowly stop being with Jesus. Yet when Jesus called the twelve, the first reason was not preaching, not miracles, not casting out demons. The first reason was this: “that they might be with Him.” Then—after fellowship—He sent them out with authority. Fellowship is important because we hear and know what is on his heart and won’t assume like Martha.
The danger is subtle: church activity can replace intimacy. Ritual can replace relationship. Service can replace sitting at His feet. But Jesus is teaching us that the most important thing is not what we do for Him—it’s who we become by being with Him.
Prayer: Lord, bring my heart back to the “one thing.” Teach me to sit at Your feet again. Let my service flow from intimacy, not pressure. Amen.
Reflection: What has been competing with your “Mary moment” lately—busyness, ministry tasks, worry, or distractions?
