Submission and Godly Character

Submission and Godly Character

Bible Reading: 1 Peter 3:1–6
Memory Verse: Matthew 5:16

It is evident that God is big on submission to authority. The previous chapter ended with Peter admonishing believers to submit to the authority in their workplace, even under an adverse work environment, because Jesus Himself humbled Himself by doing all that God sent Him to earth to do.

In the same way, Jesus did not return insult for insult. Neither should we. Instead, He trusted God with the outcome. We also must walk in His steps. Here, Peter instructs wives to submit to their husbands’ authority even if they are nonbelievers. He emphasizes the need for their lives to preach the gospel to their spouses, not their words. This is particularly difficult for women because we like to talk and say things over and over.

Our words are useless to our husbands if our godly character cannot be seen. Secondly, there is a tendency for women to focus on external beauty, using makeup, fine jewelry, and clothing. However, we must first build our inward beauty before the outward. We are most valuable when we have the strength of godly character, not when we hit the front cover of Vogue magazine for our beauty.

A meek and quiet spirit is one that has calmed itself in the Lord, trusts that God has her back, and knows that even when her husband isn’t doing the right thing, because she puts her trust in God, she will be fine. She doesn’t make decisions out of fear of the future but trusts in God.
