Bible Reading: Psalm 23; 1 Samuel 16:1–13
Special Verse: Psalm 23:1
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."
Devotional Reflection
One of the deepest questions a hurting person can ask is, "God, where were You?" It is a question that often arises after seasons of rejection, loss, betrayal, disappointment, or suffering. Perhaps you have asked that question yourself as you looked back on painful experiences and wondered why God allowed them to happen.
David understood what it meant to experience hardship. Before he became king, he faced rejection from his own family. When the prophet Samuel came to anoint Israel's next king, David was left tending sheep while his brothers were presented before the prophet. Later, after defeating Goliath, he spent years fleeing from King Saul, who sought to take his life. Yet through every trial, David learned to trust God more deeply.
Those lonely fields and hidden caves became places where David encountered God's presence. Out of those difficult seasons came many of the Psalms, including the comforting words: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." David's confidence was not based on an easy life but on the faithfulness of the God who never left him.
The truth is that we live in a fallen world where people have the freedom to make choices, and sadly, those choices sometimes bring pain to others. Rejection, injustice, betrayal, and suffering are never God's desire for His children. Yet even in the middle of brokenness, God remains present. He walks with us through every valley, strengthening us when we feel weak and sustaining us when we think we cannot go on.
When Saul pursued David, God raised up Jonathan to encourage and protect him. Time and again, God made a way for David to escape danger. Looking back, David could see that God's hand had been upon him all along. In the same way, if you reflect on your own life, you may recognize moments when God quietly protected you, brought the right people into your life, or gave you strength you didn't know you had.
The enemy may intend to use pain to destroy your faith, but God is able to redeem every difficult season. He can turn your wounds into wisdom, your trials into testimony, and your pain into a source of hope for others. What the enemy meant for evil, God is able to use for His glory.
Today, instead of asking only, "God, where were You?" ask Him to show you where He was working in the middle of your pain. You may discover that He never left you. He was carrying you, sustaining you, and preparing you for a future that is greater than your past.
Your purpose is greater than your pain because the God who saw every tear is still writing your story.
Prayer
Father, thank You for being the God who never leaves me nor forsakes me. Even when I do not understand my circumstances, help me to trust that You are working for my good. Heal every wound from my past, strengthen my faith, and turn every painful experience into a testimony of Your grace and faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Today's Declaration
God has never abandoned me. He is with me in every season, working all things together for my good and leading me into His purpose.
