Proverbs 3:9–10 (KJV)
"Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine."
Jesus made a startling connection between money and worry. In Luke 12, after warning His listeners about greed and misplaced trust in possessions, He immediately addressed the issue of anxiety. This was not accidental. Worry often reveals where our trust truly lies.
Many people think idolatry only involves bowing before carved images, but money can quietly become an idol without us realizing it. The rich young ruler is a powerful example. He called Jesus "Master" and desired eternal life, yet when faced with a choice between following Christ and holding on to his wealth, he chose his possessions. His security was not in God—it was in what he owned.
Worry is often a symptom of misplaced trust. When we become consumed with anxiety over material things, it can reveal that our confidence is resting in our bank account, investments, career, or possessions rather than in our heavenly Father. We struggle to give, share, or obey because we fear losing what we believe is our source of protection and security.
Yet Jesus gently redirects our attention to God's faithful care. He points to the birds of the air, which neither sow nor reap, yet are fed by the Father. He points to the flowers of the field, which neither toil nor spin, yet are clothed with beauty beyond human achievement. If God faithfully cares for His creation, how much more will He care for His children?
God is not against His people having resources, savings, businesses, homes, or investments. In fact, Proverbs 3:9–10 promises blessing to those who honor Him with their substance. The issue is not possession—it is dependence. God delights in blessing His children, but He never wants His blessings to replace Him as their source.
The Kingdom of God requires trust. Sometimes the Lord asks us to release what we are holding tightly—not because He wants to take from us, but because He wants to free our hearts from the grip of mammon. True freedom comes when we can sincerely say, "Lord, everything I have belongs to You, and I trust You completely."
As we seek first God's Kingdom, worry begins to lose its hold. We stop chasing money for security because we have found our security in our Father. We can rest with confidence, knowing that He is both willing and able to provide everything we truly need.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I have trusted in money, possessions, or my own resources more than I have trusted in You. Help me recognize any area where mammon has gained influence over my heart. Teach me to seek first Your Kingdom and to rest confidently in Your provision. May my trust be fully in You, knowing that You are my source, my protector, and my provider. In Jesus' name, Amen.
